Speaking in more broad terms, Nielsen’s research tells us that 44 percent of all mobile subscribers now have smartphones. Looking at recent buyers, those who purchased a new device over the last three months chose smartphones 56 percent of the time.

Those who just can’t get enough /r/Android in their daily life have probably heard of an app called BaconReader – a Reddit client for Android devices. We spent some time with the alpha of the app back in April, and the app has came a long way since then. It’s progressed so much, in fact, that it was recently acquired by OneLouder Apps, the dev team behind some awesome apps like FriendCaster, TweetCaster, and ChannelCaster.

The original dev said in a Reddit post that he will still be heading up the overall design of…

According to a group of computer scientists at North Carolina State University, a vulnerability exists within many Android devices that would allow hackers (or malicious apps) to bypass the permissions request process and tap into audio and location, wipe apps and data, or send unauthorized SMS messages, all without the user knowing.

This news may sound a bit sensational, but the researchers have created and tested a dummy app which effectively demonstrates the exploit:

Among the eight phones tested with the researchers’ diagnostic app (Woodpecker), HTC’s Evo 4G seemed to be the most vulnerable, able to…

If you’re a Verizon Wireless customer and concerned about Carrier IQ, it looks like you can leave your worry at the door. Verizon’s Jeffery Nelson confirmed via Twitter to The Verge’s Joshua Topolsky that Verizon phone are free of CIQ, and that this “was made clear two weeks ago.”

Since Google announced Ice Cream Sandwich in October, one of the most popular questions asked online is “When will Insert phone name here get Android 4.0?” That’s a difficult question to answer, but we have seen some companies like HTC, LG, and Sony Ericsson go on the record about some of the phones it pledges to support. What about the rest?

JR Raphael of ComputerWorld has compiled a list of devices promised to receive Ice Cream Sandwich and takes a guess at which devices are likely to get it. The list is not complete and has some glaring omissions, notably the HTC Thunderbolt, but it is one of the largest lists of on-the-record statements about which Android phones and tablets are expected to get Ice Cream Sandwich.

The list is viewable here and will “evolve quickly and frequently” according to Raphael, but it doesn’t answer a critical question – when? That’s what people always ask after “If” their device will be updated, and it’s a question that no one can answer right now. It’s easy to say that a phone or tablet can support Android 4.0 simply because it has the hardware to support it and number of users to make it worth the company’s money to upgrade. However, it takes a considerable amount of time to re-skin Android with Sense or Touchwiz, rebuild apps for ICS, and then go through the carrier testing process to make phones ready for updates.

It will be several months before ICS officially pops up on new phones, and some phones will take longer than others. Your best bet is to stay patient or be prepared to root your device and load a custom ROM.

Time Warner Cable is the latest to join the Market with a launch of its free app for Android tablets, which allows subscribers to program their DVR’s and check TV listings. Unfortunately, the TWC TV app doesn’t provide access to live TV channels, a service that some programmers have apparently objected to. This started from the company’s iPad app, which included a live-streaming feature of Time Warner Cable’s TWCable TV. The feature prompted Viacom (who owns MTV, VH1, and BET) to sue Time Warner Cable, because they argued that the services were outside the scope of existing distribution deals. So it leaves this stripped down version of the app, bringing some decent options that includes access to the following features:

  • Ability to program DVR
  • Add favorite channels
  • Use Android tablet as a remote control
  • View a filtered guide showing favorite channels or HD channels only
  • Search for programming by title or episode

The app is also available to all customers with set-top boxes or DVRs running the Time Warner Cable “Navigator” interactive program guide. I’m not sure how far this goes when it pertains to set-top-boxes, because I haven’t seen the channel app on my Roku 2 box as of yet. TWC TV will operate on all tabs running Honeycomb Android version 3.x, so whether you have the Motorola Xoom, Lenovo K1 Ideapad, or Samsung Galaxy Tab your good.

That said, I’m not sure if this app is any better than Direct TV or Comcast’s Xfinity app, but if you are customer of TWC you should give it a try by hitting our trusty button below. Tell us how you like the app? Is it any good?

When security researcher Trevor Eckhart discovered that CarrierIQ was logging a surprising amount of data, the company promptly sent Eckhart a cease-and-desist letter that threatened legal action if he didn’t stop publishing information about the company and what its products do behind-the-scenes on Sprint HTC phones. After the Electronic Frontier Foundation came to Eckhart’s defense, CarrierIQ backed-off its legal threats and simply said it does not log keystrokes or do anything other than provide network operators with data to help help better serve customers.

So why is it that Eckhart now has video proof showing that Carrier IQ does log all data entered into the phone, including phones numbers dialed, emails sent, and buttons pressed? This despite Carrier IQ releasing a statement to the media two weeks ago emphatically denying any such thing takes place.

While we look at many aspects of a device’s performance, we are counting and summarizing performance, not recording keystrokes or providing tracking tools. The metrics and tools we derive are not designed to deliver such information, nor do we have any intention of developing such tool. – Carrier IQ, Nov. 16

Either Carrier IQ is telling a blatant lie or the company is unaware of what’s happening with its own software. In this video by Eckhart, spotted via Geek.com, it’s clear that there is definitely some keylogging going on. Using an HTC EVO 3D on Sprint, the computer logs when the home and back buttons are pressed, which could reasonably be expected to serve as part of CIQ’s “performance” research. Maybe it’s just seeing if the back button might be what triggers a force close.

But as the video progresses, things become less explainable. Even when searching Google using HTTPS, which is supposed to be encrypted and secure, Carrier IQ displays the information in plain text. The IQ application is then seen logging phone numbers that a person dials, and an SMS message – including number and the actual body of the message – is recorded before it even displays on the phone. Carrier IQ appears to know that your daughter is staying at a friend’s house before you do.

Today, we have some good news for our readers who own an LG Android smartphone running Android 2.1 or higher. If you fit this criteria, then you are eligible to download the Box.net app and receive 50GB of free storage. This promotion is currently running from November 30, 2011 until March 31, 2012.  Even if you don’t think you have a need for cloud storage, you may want to download, install the app, and create an account simply to receive the 50GB of storage just in case you need it in the future.

The Box app allows you to upload files from your computer and access it remotely on your Android smartphone. In addition, you can upload files from your smartphone for access on your computer. File sharing becomes a lot easier since Box allows you to create a private link that can be sent out only to those you trust. The advantage to uploading files to the cloud is the fact that it will not take up any space on your local hard drive and you can access it anywhere on any smartphone with the Box app and any PC.

Now, in case you don’t own an LG Android smartphone, you can still download the app and take advantage of the free 5GB storage Box offers news users.

Before writing this post, I thought I would try the Box app on my T-Mobile G2X (by LG) since I haven’t used it before.  It was an easy process to receive the 50GB of storage — all I did was download the app from the Android Market and create an account.  I primarily use Dropbox for my file storage/sharing needs, but I may start using Box more since it offers 25x the storage space.

Reddit went from being “that struggling site like Digg” to being that site that’s actually grew to be much larger and more popular (according to some traffic-monitoring sites). There’s an incredibly large and highly-engaged community around the link-and-photo-sharing site, as well as the topic-driven subreddits that keep people constantly checking back.

BaconReader has just arrived to become what’s arguably the best reddit Android app, and unequivocally the best-looking app. Available now for Android 1.6 and higher, BaconReader is a light, gorgeous application that organizes content exceptionally well. Aside from a large and rather annoying ad bar – removable through a $1.99 in-app upgrade – there’s really nothing to complain about from a visual standpoint. (Go to Menu > Settings > Remove Advertisements.)

Reading through BaconReader is pretty tasty as well. Not only can users get a well-organized presentation of each thread, there’s a control bar that can hide, save, share, or vote them up/down. Users can also turn off thumbnails, blacklist domains or keywords to prevent them from appearing, and get notifications for comments or replies.

All of the discussions, links, and trolling that makes reedit great are present in BaconReader. Members can manage which subreddits appear and switch views between the What’s Hot, New, Saved, etc., options. Browsing and posting are remarkably easy, and the overall performance of the app is stellar. The only complaints I can levy are that ad bar (again, upgrade to ditch it) and the “Preview” button for loading link content in BaconReader is painfully slow. It’s better to just follow the URL and go about your business. The app loads posts in an acceptable amount of time, but getting rid of thumbnails will accelerate load times

I won’t proclaim BaconReader to be the best reddit client because I haven’t used them all and I know that people are very particular about the way apps meet their tastes. But to be honest, after using this app for half a day, the others will have to really impress me. BaconReader is practically everything that I would expect or want from a reddit Android app.

  • Color coded comment threads
  • Easy to use, full featured inbox
  • Rageface and look of disapproval support
  • Search for new subreddits based on name or keyword and subscribe to them
