Nielsen has released their latest smartphone figures for U.S. market this week  and, keeping with trends, Android leads all mobile platforms. With 42.8 percent of the pie, it is easily bests Apple’s 28.3 percent and RIM’s 17.8 percent.   Where is Windows Phone 7 in all of this?  Fourth place with only 6.1 percent of the market.  In terms of handset makers benefiting the most, Nielsen finds that HTC commands 15 percent followed by Motorola (10.4%) and Samsung (10.1%).

Speaking in more broad terms, Nielsen’s research tells us that 44 percent of all mobile subscribers now have smartphones. Looking at recent buyers, those who purchased a new device over the last three months chose smartphones 56 percent of the time.

Samsung has unveiled their latest System-on-chip (SoC) this week, trumpeting the arrival of the Exynos 5250, a dual-core 2GHz chipset.  Expected to be used in high-end tablets, the Samsung chips go into mass production in the second quarter of 2012.  At that rate we might expect to see these in future Galaxy Tabs and other tablets in the second half of the year.  We’d love to see these arrive in smartphones down the road and it wouldn’t surprise us if it actually happens.

As compared to today’s processors, the dual-core Exynos 5250 features 4X graphics performance over current Cortex-A9-based Application Processors.  Additional details include supports for stereoscopic 3D displays and display resolutions of up to WQXGA (2560×1600).

With CES, MWC, and CTIA breathing down our necks we might be able to see concept devices show up over the next few months.

Time Warner Cable has made good on its promise to release an Android app, and while it doesn’t include the most important feature (and is only compatible with tablets) it’s better than nothing. The TWC TV app will turn your Android tablet into a glorified remote control allowing you to view program listings for up to 7 days, change channels on compatible set-top boxes, search for programming by title or episode, and even schedule and manage upcoming DVR recordings.

Those are certainly a few nice features, but I’m betting you noticed a very important feature missing from that list — live streaming. This is a huge disappointment to just about everyone, but it’s been said that live streaming will only be available with Android 4.0. While it does suck, it makes sense and they are right to wait — considering Android 4.0 is everything Honeycomb was supposed to be.

Now comes the fun part (can you feel the sarcasm?). In order to enjoy the benefits of this service, you must first meet a long list of prerequisites (and that’s even if the service is available in your area). For starters, you must own an Android tablet running Honeycomb — and while the app has only been tested and approved for the Motorola XOOM and Samsung Galaxy Tab, it should work on other Honeycomb tablets with a 1280×800 resolution. Once you’ve checked that off the list, other requirements include:

  • Time Warner Cable video package at the Standard (Expanded Basic) level or higher
  • Compatible set-top box or DVR running the Time Warner Cable “Navigator” interactive program guide (Motorola iGuide equipment is currently unsupported)
  • Internet connection (WiFi or 3G)
  • Time Warner Cable user name and password

I’ve heard the list of supported DVR boxes is very slim so you may want to check with TWC before banging your head against the wall. So, while your not going to be able to watch your favorite show while on the can, you can at least show off your fancy new remote the next time someone stops by.

The TWC TV app is available for free in the Android Market and can be downloaded by following the link below. Good luck!

exynos-5250

It’s not much of a secret that the Samsung Exynos process is one of the fastest dual-core mobile chips on the planet. Sammy announced the blazing fast evolution of its flagship processor this morning, and it’s said to be twice as fast as the current chip. It’s still dual-core and clocks in at 2GHz, only a slight bump up from the current speed.

As you likely already know, though, sheer numbers mean nothing in terms of actually processor speed – it’s all about architecture. The next-gen Exynos is the first SoC (System-on-Chip) to use ARM’s new…

Giving would-be Transformer Prime owners one more thing to drool over, the first Tegra 3 tablet has made an appearance on Nenamark’s site, alongside just about every other Android device in existence.
