Samsung has unveiled their latest System-on-chip (SoC) this week, trumpeting the arrival of the Exynos 5250, a dual-core 2GHz chipset.  Expected to be used in high-end tablets, the Samsung chips go into mass production in the second quarter of 2012.  At that rate we might expect to see these in future Galaxy Tabs and other tablets in the second half of the year.  We’d love to see these arrive in smartphones down the road and it wouldn’t surprise us if it actually happens.

As compared to today’s processors, the dual-core Exynos 5250 features 4X graphics performance over current Cortex-A9-based Application Processors.  Additional details include supports for stereoscopic 3D displays and display resolutions of up to WQXGA (2560×1600).

With CES, MWC, and CTIA breathing down our necks we might be able to see concept devices show up over the next few months.

Today, we have some good news for our readers who own an LG Android smartphone running Android 2.1 or higher. If you fit this criteria, then you are eligible to download the Box.net app and receive 50GB of free storage. This promotion is currently running from November 30, 2011 until March 31, 2012.  Even if you don’t think you have a need for cloud storage, you may want to download, install the app, and create an account simply to receive the 50GB of storage just in case you need it in the future.

The Box app allows you to upload files from your computer and access it remotely on your Android smartphone. In addition, you can upload files from your smartphone for access on your computer. File sharing becomes a lot easier since Box allows you to create a private link that can be sent out only to those you trust. The advantage to uploading files to the cloud is the fact that it will not take up any space on your local hard drive and you can access it anywhere on any smartphone with the Box app and any PC.

Now, in case you don’t own an LG Android smartphone, you can still download the app and take advantage of the free 5GB storage Box offers news users.

Before writing this post, I thought I would try the Box app on my T-Mobile G2X (by LG) since I haven’t used it before.  It was an easy process to receive the 50GB of storage — all I did was download the app from the Android Market and create an account.  I primarily use Dropbox for my file storage/sharing needs, but I may start using Box more since it offers 25x the storage space.

Here’s a live wallpaper that’s a little bit different than your probably used to, Steampunk Skull. Offered in both paid and free versions, this live wallpaper adds some edge to any tablet or smartphone and can be found in the Android Market.

At first I tried the free version and loved it so much that I decided to get the paid version that costs only $1.49. Both wallpapers feature the same image that you see above, a steampunk style skull with moving gears and lighting effects that all change with touch interaction. While looking at the wallpaper without touching your screen, the gears move at a slow constant pace and the light tube thing on the left produces an evenly glowing wavelength. Upon swiping left or right on the screen you will notice the gears change pace and the old school light bulb starts to flicker with an eerie glow, that’s my favorite kind of LW, the ones that change with touch interaction.

There are a few differences between the free and paid versions and the measly price of $1.49 is well worth the upgrade. The paid version allows for 6 different themes and has customization options that are not available on the free version. If you’re the type to frequently change your wallpaper than the paid version is probably for you. A simple double tap of the background will cycle through the themes and there is bound to be a color/gear combo to suit any mood. To check out this live wallpaper hit one of the links below. I suggest that you give the free version a spin and if you like it then support the developers and go with the paid.

Researchers at North Carolina State University revealed some major findings regarding Android devices. Using a tool called “Woodpecker” that was developed the researchers, they found noteworthy vulnerabilities on HTC, Samsung and Motorola smartphones. The specific phones studied were the HTC Legend, EVO 4G, and Wildfire S; the Motorola Droid and Droid X; the Samsung Epic 4G; and the Google Nexus One and Nexus S. Woodpecker analyzed the pre-loaded pieces of software on each phone, probing for capacity leaks– sensitive application and operating system privileges left exposed to other applications in ways that would allow them to be accessed by a malicious app without requesting permission from the device user. The researchers were “surprised to find out these stock phone images [on the devices tested] do not properly enforce [Android's] permission-based security model”.

Basically the capacity leaks fell into two categories, explicit and implicit. Explicit leaks allows applications to exploit a public interface or service of another app without making a permission request. Implicit leaks allows other applications to inherit permissions from another application signed with the same digital certificate (this allows applications from the same developer to automatically interact with each other). They found that while implicit leaks were not as serious a problem, explicit leaks were. Sensitive information such as geo-location, address book, SMS messages, etc.– were leaked on the pre-installed apps. Moreover the researchers found “an untrusted app on these affected phones can manage to wipe out the user data on the phones, send out SMS messages (e.g., to premium numbers), record user conversation, or obtain user geo-locations—all without asking for any permission”. This study is definitely eye-opening, but not surprising as there are examples of some HTC phones and Motorola DROIDs being vulnerable.

So what do you as an Android owner take from this study? First pay close attention to the permissions that each and everyone of your applications of your smartphone or tablet may have. Remember gang, we have a nice little tip sheet for how to spot questionable applications and verify permissions in order to keep your Android protected. Second– Android manufacturers (and even Google) will need to take software security much more seriously. Hopefully the new generation of Android devices will alleviate our fears and concerns for these software holes found in the Android OS.
