Time Warner Cable has made good on its promise to release an Android app, and while it doesn’t include the most important feature (and is only compatible with tablets) it’s better than nothing. The TWC TV app will turn your Android tablet into a glorified remote control allowing you to view program listings for up to 7 days, change channels on compatible set-top boxes, search for programming by title or episode, and even schedule and manage upcoming DVR recordings.

Those are certainly a few nice features, but I’m betting you noticed a very important feature missing from that list — live streaming. This is a huge disappointment to just about everyone, but it’s been said that live streaming will only be available with Android 4.0. While it does suck, it makes sense and they are right to wait — considering Android 4.0 is everything Honeycomb was supposed to be.

Now comes the fun part (can you feel the sarcasm?). In order to enjoy the benefits of this service, you must first meet a long list of prerequisites (and that’s even if the service is available in your area). For starters, you must own an Android tablet running Honeycomb — and while the app has only been tested and approved for the Motorola XOOM and Samsung Galaxy Tab, it should work on other Honeycomb tablets with a 1280×800 resolution. Once you’ve checked that off the list, other requirements include:

  • Time Warner Cable video package at the Standard (Expanded Basic) level or higher
  • Compatible set-top box or DVR running the Time Warner Cable “Navigator” interactive program guide (Motorola iGuide equipment is currently unsupported)
  • Internet connection (WiFi or 3G)
  • Time Warner Cable user name and password

I’ve heard the list of supported DVR boxes is very slim so you may want to check with TWC before banging your head against the wall. So, while your not going to be able to watch your favorite show while on the can, you can at least show off your fancy new remote the next time someone stops by.

The TWC TV app is available for free in the Android Market and can be downloaded by following the link below. Good luck!

If you happen to own a Tegra powered Android device, we have yet another Tegra “exclusive” game for you to enjoy. Zen Pinball THD has hit the market as a free download and comes with one free “Sorcerer’s Lair” themed table. Featuring interactive 3D models, advanced ball physics, rich social features and hot seat multiplayer, Zen Pinball THD is a definite winner among pinball video games.

The game is available for Tegra powered devices running Android 2.3 and while it only comes with the one free table, there are many other tables available for purchase — including the critically acclaimed Marvel Pinball series. The Marvel series looks awesome and would be an automatic purchase in my house if only I owned a Tegra powered device (apparently striking an exclusive deal is more profitable than actually selling your product). The game looks like a lot of fun and comes with other great features to keep those flippers moving:

  • Worldwide leader boards and friend challenges
  • Table achievements
  • Each table comes equipped with a rule sheet providing tips and tricks to help you boost your score
  • Pass the game around to friends as you compete with each other for the top pinball wizard in Hot Seat multiplayer mode

If you’ve been looking for a feature rich pinball game like Zen Pinball THD and have yourself a Tegra device, head on over to the Android Market and give it a pop.

Android developers looking at various advertising and monetization options may want to swing by Aduru and check out their “collaborative mobile ad network”.  Designed with a “scratch our back and we’ll scratch yours” model it allows developers to trade their unused ad space.  In other words, you advertise the games/apps for developers X and Y in your app and those guys advertise yours in their app.  It doesn’t cost you anything to do it and you won’t earn any actual revenue but you’ll get ad impressions – and that may be all you need.

Features of Aduru:

  • Aduru as a “backfill” network – A great way to use Aduru is to display an Aduru ad when your “paid” ads fail to fill. This strategy ensures you always maximise your ad space as Aduru offers a 100% fill rate.
  • Split your ad requests – Decide how often you wish to display “paid adverts” and when you’d like to earn ad impressions by displaying Aduru adverts (now supports AdWhirl)
  • Split requests by date/time – Does your paid advert provider routinely have times when their eCPM is particularly low? If so this may be a good time to display Aduru ads and earn yourself impressions for your adverts
  • Run House Ads – If you have paid and ad supported apps, run Aduru adverts within your ad supported app and earn impressions to advertise your paid app!

Inertia: Escape Velocity Crash Lands onto the App Store and Android Market Today
Challenging and Unique Anti-Gravity Platformer Promises Console Experience on Touch Devices

Hermes’ ship has crashed in a spaceship junkyard and the deep space salvager must don his anti-gravity suit and collect enough space debris to get home. Launching today, Inertia: Escape Velocity is the first mobile game for touch devices from independent developer Red Fly Studio and will put players into Hermes’ anti-gravity boots. This physics-based platformer will present players with challenging levels to master using a unique anti-gravity mechanic – by manipulating gravity, navigating force fields, and overcoming other obstacles, players will help Hermes collect enough space debris to fix his ship. Download Inertia: Escape Velocity today in the App Store and Android Market for $1.99 ($3.99 on iPad and Android tablets).

Features of Inertia: Escape Velocity include:

Physics-based platformer: employ a unique anti-gravity element to float, glide, and bounce around deep space environments to collect space junk for ship repair and to unlock new planets.
Console gameplay on mobile devices: with high-quality graphics, intense and challenging levels, and a unique gameplay mechanic, core gamers will appreciate a console gaming experience on a portable platform.
Control settings: the game uses on-screen controls for movement, jumping, and gravity control, but players can also opt to use challenging “tilt” controls that turn the entire device into the controller.
Inferno levels: for even more of a challenge, players can try their hand at these high-difficulty versions of each level.

Inertia: Escape Velocity is the spiritual successor to the award-winning student project Inertia. Created by students out of Southern Methodist University’s game development program (known as the The Guildhall at SMU), Inertia was awarded the Grand Prize for non-commercial games in the 2011 Indie Game Challenge this past February, even beating out indie hit Limbo in the Gamer’s Choice category. With the creators of the original Inertia now part of the development team at Red Fly Studio, a percentage of proceeds from the sale of Inertia: Escape Velocity will be donated to The Guildhall at SMU.

One of Lookout’s principal engineers, Tim Wyatt, took to the company’s blog to weigh in on the situation surround Carrier IQ and the logging of keystrokes.  According to Wyatt, Lookout has not found Carrier IQ to be malicious in its practice although he did recognize that it does capture keystrokes on devices although they do not  appear to be sending them to the wireless carriers.

Wyatt doesn’t give Carrier IQ a complete pass for their actions, pointing to concern that most consumers are “neither aware of its presence on their mobile devices, nor of the level of data that is being collected”.  Lookout would like to see a “a clear opt-out path” for users wishing to maintain a level of privacy and we’re all for that.  Assuming the intentions are good and the execution is clean, we’d still like the option to refuse participation.
